Mike's Review
After a recent and humiliating defeat at Words with Friends, my brother Dan told me that he wasn't playing the game anymore because he'd discovered something new, Draw Something. I'd seen the title flying around the various blogs, so I downloaded the free version and gave it a go. Within an hour, I'd ponied up the .99 to get the full version. Within another half hour, I'd spent some of the in-game gold coins to buy a wider color pallet.
Draw Something has captured the imagination of my entire family. My kids see the notification that it is my turn and beg me to let them take it. It is a very fun game.
It works like this: You have a blank canvas, a crayon, an eraser and the choice of three words: easy, medium and hard. Each word is worth either one, two or three coins. You choose a word and then draw it. You can draw a series of pictures (like turning the pages of a notebook) or just the one. Then you send your drawing to your opponent (which is usually a Facebook friend).
Your opponent tries to guess what you're drawing. If they get it right, you get the coins. Then they send you one and the process continues until one of you cannot get the answer.
Part of the fun is receiving the response from your opponent because you get to see a video of your own artistic process and how long it takes your opponent to guess what you've drawn. You're given a number of blanks and some letters to fill them in, so you're not left completely in the dark. If it's too hard, you can press the bomb button and blow up some of the letter tiles that aren't in the word.
Draw Something is clever, fun and I'm glad my brother pointed it out to me.
There is, however, a couple of changes I'd like to see: the app needs an "undo" button for when you make a stray mark that is difficult to erase without messing up the entire picture. Also, it could use a pass-and-play option so my kids can play it on a single iPad. Finally, once you've linked the game to a Facebook account, there doesn't seem to be a way to unlink it. So, my son can't play on the iPad while I play on my iPhone despite having the iPad set to his Facebook account.
Perhaps this will be addressed in an update. Regardless, it is a great game that I highly recommend.
