CES 2014 Last Gadget Standing

See the winners of the Mobile Apps Showdown 2014

Gary Dell’Abate and Jon Hein

Day three of the 2014 CES was highlighted by the Last Gadget Standing and Mobile Apps Showdown competitions. The Last Gadget Standing competition challenged contenders to present fast-paced product demos to a live CES audience. Co- hosts Gary Dell’Abate and Jon Hein from SiriusXM Radio’s Howard Stern channels hosted the competition, and winners were selected through an applause-o-meter.

The winner of the product “most likely to change the face of technology,” was a Bluetooth-enabled deadbolt that is managed through a smart phone. A separate online vote awarded the top prize to the Skulpt Aim, a body fat/muscle-quality measurement device. A full list of finalists is available here.

Password Box, a password management app with a social twist, took home the top prize at the 2014 Mobile Apps Showdown sponsored by Living in Digital Times. The fully-encrypted app lets you instantly login to your go-to websites and apps without having to type in your password. You can also track credit cards, passports and other sensitive data and securely share information with friends through the app.

Emceed by Gary Dell'Abate and Jon Hein from Sirius XM, the showdown featured four-minute elevator-pitch-style presentations from 10 semifinalist app developers, selected ahead of time by a team of expert panelists and Living in Digital Times readers.  The winner was chosen by crowd applause.

Ballerz, an app that helps players find pickup basketball games in their area based on skill level, was the online showdown winner. Ballerz was developed by a group of active duty naval officers who found that playing sports reduced stress and boosted morale on the base. A complete list of semi-finalists and ”app-reneurs” can be found online.

From Greg

Here is the original story I saw about the product.

Easily Update Ancient Stereos With ION Audio's Bluetooth Cassette

You may have convinced your parents to upgrade to a smartphone or a tablet, but that monstrous ancient stereo system in their living room that served them well in the 1980s isn't going anywhere. Thankfully, ION Audio's new Cassette Adapter Bluetooth is a ridiculously easy way to get their old and modern technology to play nice together.

It's all but guaranteed that your parents know how to use an audio cassette, and that's about as difficult as this rechargeable wireless adapter gets. The Bluetooth receiver automatically turns on when it's inserted into a boombox or a car's outdated stereo, and then switches itself off when it's ejected. And while availability and pricing haven't been revealed yet, it's safe to assume this adapter will be a lot cheaper than replacing your parent's beloved sound system.

FootLogger Activity Sensor

From Greg
I came across this interesting article on a new sensor debuting at this year's CES.
From gizmag
Wristband-style activity tracking devices can already measure things like how much exercise you get each day, thanks partly to their built-in accelerometers. The engineers at 3L Labs, however, claim that their FootLoggers insoles can do even more. Each device utilizes not only a three-axis accelerometer, but also eight pressure sensors.
To use FootLoggers, you start by putting a pair of them in your shoes – they're reportedly fairly lightweight and unobtrusive. You then proceed to exercise, perform your chosen sport or go about your regular daily activities, depending on the application. Each insole can log up to 50,000 footprints on its built-in flash memory, and run for at least 24 hours per charge of its integrated battery.
When you're done for the day, you take your shoes off and place them on the accompanying ShoeStation. This docking device detects the insoles through the soles of the shoes, and starts wirelessly recharging them – it has a range of 50 mm.
At the same time, the insoles automatically transmit their stored data to the ShoeStation via Bluetooth. The station proceeds to send that information to 3L Labs' internet-based server, where it's analyzed. The results are then sent back to you and/or someone else (such as a coach) via SMS or a dedicated smartphone app.
Fairly obviously, the FootLogger can serve as a high-tech pedometer that records stats like distance traveled and calories burned. The arrangement of its multiple pressure sensors, however, also allows it to map how the user's weight is distributed with each step. This makes a variety of applications possible.
For athletes, the technology can show if they're placing and transferring their weight correctly, such as in a running stride or a golf swing. In the field of healthcare, the insoles can reportedly be used for things like gait assessment, fall detection, rehabilitation monitoring, and early prediction of conditions such as dementia or spinal disease.
Finally, as with just about every other form of emerging technology, they could also conceivably find use as gaming input devices.
The FootLogger system will be on display at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, although there's currently no word on pricing or availability. Interested parties might also want to check out Fraunhofer's smart running shoe or Adidas' adizero f50 football boot.
